POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Judith: Okay, ‘flowers’ sounds like a typical Dutch topic. I heard that a lot of cities have flower markets, but this “bloemenmarkt” in Amsterdam is really unique. |
Peter: Yeah, the ‘bloemenmarkt’ in Amsterdam is great! It’s unique. It is situated on a canal called the ‘Singel’ and it’s a floating flower market! Very uninque. |
Judith: That sounds like a strange place , like on a canal? Sounds like a strange place to have flower market. |
Peter: But the Dutch have everything in water. But there is a good reason for it why this market floats on the canal. When this market was first established 150 years ago, the plants and flowers sold there, they were brought to Amsterdam on barges via canals from all kind of parts in the city. It was easier to organize the market on the water than transport all the plants and flowers to land. |
Judith: Nowadays, of course, the fresh flowers are brought in by land. Still brought in fresh every day but the market still remains on barges. And the barges are permanently anchored there. |
Peter: Yeah, and people they visit the flower market , of course when they want to buy flowers but not only than. It is also a beautiful place to have a walk among the beautiful and fragrant flowers and oh..the smell is just beautiful. Both tourists and locals mix up and they visit the market just to enjoy the beautiful atmosphere and the smell of flowers. |
Judith: Wow! |
Peter: Holland, flower country, did I already mention the tulips? |
Judith: haha! |

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES |
Judith: Now let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
Peter: The first word we’ll look at is.... "Bloemenmarkt" (flower market) and "tulpenbollen" (tulip bulbs) are compound nouns. Dutch is like German in that you can stick words together and create longer words that way. |
Lesson focus
|
Judith: The focus of this lesson is demonstrative pronouns. Demonstrative pronouns are words like "this", "that", "these", or “those”. These words point to something. |
Peter: In Dutch, the form of the demonstrative pronouns depends on the gender of the noun (“de” or “het”). |
Judith: It also depends whether it is singular or plural. |
Peter: And it depends if it is close by (hier = here) or far away (daar = there). For things that are close-by, the words of “de” use "deze", for example “deze stoel” (this chair) and the words with “het” use "dit", for example “dit huis” (this house). In plural, both use "deze", deze stoelen (these chairs), deze huizen (these houses). |
Judith: So it's "deze" for all except singular "het" words. If you have to guess, no matter if singular or plural, just use "deze". |
Peter: When you are talking about things that are further away, the words with “de” use "die", for example “die stoel” (that chair). the words with “het” use "dat", as in "dat huis" (that house). In plural, both of them use "die". die stoelen (those chairs), die huizen (those houses). So when you are talking about things that are further away, a good guess is that they'll use "die". |
