| Judith: Good, we’ll leave at a quarter to twelve, then we’ll take Loes to the library. After that I have a half hour for the grocery shopping. And afterwards I’ll take you to soccer. At five o’clock I’ll come pick you guys up again. |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Judith: So the title of this lesson is ‘Arrive at the Right Time in the Netherlands’. And I mentioned it just like in Germany it’s very important in the Netherlands to be on time. |
| Peter: Yeah. the Dutch are just like the Germans. The Dutch take punctuality for business meetings very seriously and they expect that you will do the same. So if you are going to be late always call with an explanation if you are going to be late. Lateness, missed appointments, postponements, changing the time of an appointment, or a late delivery all weaken trust and can ruin relationships. |
| Judith: The same is true for friendly visits; when you are asked to be there at a certain time, it is considered polite to arrive exactly on time. |
| Peter: But there are always the rules and the exceptions. When you are asked to be somewhere “rond 7 uur” (around 7) then you should never be early. It would be considered rude, so only in this case is it advisable to be ‘fashionably’ late. Not too late though, mind you. |
| Judith: What would you consider too late if you are asked to be somewhere “around 7”? |
| Peter: After 8 would be too late. |
| Judith: So a maximum of one hour? |
| Peter: Maximum of one hour when it comes to “rond”. “Rond 7 uur” means in between 7 and 8 , though preferably at 7.15 or 7.30. |
| Judith: That’s a good guideline! |
| Pter: A good guideline for those Dutch behaviours. |

| KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES |
| Judith: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Peter: The first word we’ll look at is....”bieb” as in “de bieb”. This is short for "de bibliotheek", which means library. Although started by high school students, this abbreviation is now widely used by people of all ages and it even appears in the largest Dutch language dictionary “de van Dale”. "Dat kan", literally "that can", means "it is possible". "Uurtje" is the diminutive of "uur"; "uur" is "hour" and "uurtje" is "little hour". |

| Peter: The standard expression for asking what time it is is "Hoe laat is het?" (“What time is it?” or “At what time?”, literally "How late is it?"). The answer starts with "Het is..." ( It is .... ) |
| For example "Hoe laat is het? - Het is vier uur. " (How late is it - It is 4 o'clock) |
