Hello, and welcome to the Culture Class- Holidays in the Netherlands Series at DutchPod101.com. In this series, we’re exploring the traditions behind Dutch holidays and observances. I’m Eric, and you're listening to Season 1, Lesson 4. Easter. In Dutch, it’s called [Pasen] |
The date of Easter, or [Pasen], is hard to determine, because it depends on two astronomical elements; the beginning of spring and the full moon. The only thing that can be said for sure is that Easter cannot fall earlier than March 22 or later than April 25. |
In this lesson we’ll learn how Dutch people spend Easter and the days leading up to it. |
Now, before we get into more detail, do you know the answer to this question? |
Do you know how the Netherlands was thanked by the Pope, or [paus], during his Easter speech? |
If you don't already know, you’ll find out a bit later. Keep listening. |
There are two holidays that lead up to the Easter celebration. These are White Thursday, or [Witte Donderdag], and Good Friday, or [Goede Vrijdag]. On White Thursday, Dutch people commemorate The Last Supper of Jesus with his Apostles, or in Dutch [apostel]. Good Friday is the day when Jesus was crucified on Calvary Hill near Jerusalem. The name Good Friday is related to the fact that Jesus sacrificed himself for humanity and for the forgiveness of the sins committed by the people. |
On Easter day, Christians all over the world celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. According to the Bible, or [Bijbel] in Dutch, he died on the cross on Good Friday, but resurrected from the dead three days later. Christians celebrate the fact that Jesus Christ died for our sins and was about to conquer death. |
Now it's time to answer our quiz question- |
Do you know how the Netherlands was thanked by the pope during his Easter speech? |
Holland provides the flowers used to decorate Easter Mass in St. Peter’s Square, and in appreciation of this, each year the Pope always is sure to say [Bedankt voor de bloemen] , which means“Thank you for the flowers”. |
How did you like this lesson? Did you learn something interesting? |
Do you know what date Easter will fall on this year? |
