Hi everyone |
I'm Thomas |
hallo dai, ik ben Tomas. |
Welcome to the Dutch Whiteboard Lessons. |
In this lesson you'll learn how to give your email in Dutch. |
Let's get started. |
Okay, let's look at the vocabulary. |
I'm going to run you through the alphabet in Dutch. |
As you can see, I've added a little pronunciation guide. |
So let's start at the top. |
A - ah |
B - bay |
C - say |
D - day |
E - ay |
F - ef |
G - hay |
H - hah |
I - ee |
J - yay |
K - kah |
L - el |
M - em |
N - en |
O - o |
P - pay |
Q - ku |
R - ehr |
S - s |
T - tay |
U - oo |
V - vay |
W - way |
X - ix |
Y - aai |
Z - zet |
Let's look at the dialogue. |
When I read, I want you to pay attention to the email address. |
Find the letters and see how they're used in the dialogue. |
Uw e-mailadres, alstublieft. |
Your email address, please. |
Mijn e-mailadres is |
My email address is |
thomas@innolang.com |
thomas@innolang.com |
One more time slowly. |
Uw e-mailadres, alstublieft. |
Mijn e-mailadres is thomas.innolang.com |
thomas.innolang.com |
Now let's look at the sentence pattern. |
This pattern is the structure that our dialogue follows. |
Mijn e-mailadres |
email address. |
Which means in English |
my email address is |
email address. |
Now there's a few small things I'd like to point out. |
In Dutch |
My is written ""Mijn"". |
If you look at this bit here |
it's an ""I"" and a ""J"" put together to create the ""I"" sound. |
Same as in the alphabet when we use the Y. |
However, in handwriting |
a lot of people connect these two where it looks like a Y with two dots on it. |
However, when you type write |
it is always the combination of I and J. |
Keep that in mind. |
Also, it may look like the word my in English |
but the Dutch word ""may"" is actually ""me"" in English. |
Also |
when you talk about your email address |
inevitably this comes into play. |
Now this little sign in Dutch officially is called aapenstaartje |
which literally means a monkey's tail. |
Fun little fact, but a bit long as a word. |
So these days, most Dutch people |
just simply when they spell out their email address say ""at"" just like in English. |
Finally, the word email in Dutch is written with a dash. |
Whereas in English, it's a single word. |
Now |
if you were to write this as a single word in Dutch |
it actually becomes a completely different word with a different meaning. |
Don't write it like this because this word means enamel in Dutch. |
Remember the nice little metal plates that they use for advertising enamel. |
So it's a completely different word. |
Always write it with a dash. |
