| Eric: Hi everyone, and welcome back to DutchPod101.com. This is Lower Intermediate Season 1 Lesson 5 - Playing Phone-Tag in the Netherlands. Eric here. |
| Jacob: Hallo. I'm Jacob. |
| Eric: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask someone to call you back in Dutch. The conversation takes place over the phone and next to the phone. |
| Jacob: It's between Mark, Tina and Peter. |
| Eric: Mark and Tina are friends, so they’ll be using informal Dutch, but will be speaking formally to Peter since they don’t know him well. Okay, let's listen to the conversation. |

| Jacob: Yes. A few years ago it was common to call and leave a voicemail if you needed to get in touch, but now people send text messages and e-mails. |
| Eric: And it seems like the changes create a lot of new words in Dutch too, right? |

| Eric: “to check messages.” |
| Jacob: Berichten means “messages.” It’s the plural form of bericht, meaning “message.” Controleren means “to check.” |
| Eric: When it’s used as a noun, it means “control” right? |
| Jacob: Yes. For example, alles onder controle, |
| Eric: “everything is under control.” |
| Jacob: Using the phrase Berichten controleren you can say... Berichten controleren doe ik alleen 's avonds. |
| Eric: “I only check my messages at night.” Okay, what's the next phrase? |
| Jacob: Zo snel mogelijk. |
| Eric: “as soon as possible.” |
| Jacob: This phrase has the word Mogelijk, meaning “possible.” You can use this word in expressions like zo vroeg mogelijk, |
| Eric: “as early as possible,” |
| Jacob: or zo snel mogelijk, |
| Eric: “as soon as possible.” Can you give us an example using this word? |
| Jacob: Sure. For example, you can say.. Ik ga zo snel mogelijk naar mijn arts. |
| Eric: .. which means “I'll see my physician ASAP.” Okay, what's the next phrase? |
| Jacob: geen probleem |
| Eric: which means “no problem.” |
| Jacob: Geen means “no” or “none” and een probleem means “a problem.” So, altogether geen probleem means “no problem.” |
| Eric: Using these, we can make a sentence like “Driving there shouldn't be a problem,” right? |
| Jacob: Yes, in Dutch, that’s.. Daarheen rijden lijkt mij geen probleem. |
| Eric: “Driving there shouldn't be a problem.” Okay, now onto the lesson focus. |

| Eric: In this lesson you’ll learn how to ask someone to call you back in Dutch. In the dialogue Tina says… |
| Jacob: Bel me zo snel mogelijk terug! Mijn nummer is 06-1347-6862. |
| Eric: which means “Call me back ASAP, my number is 06-1347-6862.” Jacob, let's break down this phrase to see the meaning of each word. |
| Jacob: First we have the commonly used phrase bel me zo snel mogelijk terug which means “call me back asap.” bel me zo here means “call me back.” |
| Eric: And in informal cases we need to use a different phrase to say “call me back”, right? |
| Jacob: Yes. In informal situations you can use the verb terugbellen, which means “call back” and say kun je even terugbellen. For example, Hoi Joe, dit is Frank, kun je even terugbellen. |
| Eric: “Hi Joe, this is Frank, can you call me back?” This is a very informal way to ask a friend to call you back. |
| Jacob: For more formal situations, you can use some set phrases, for example,...Hallo Catherine, wil je me alsjeblieft even terugbellen? |
| Eric: “Hello Catherine, could you please call me back?” |
| Jacob: If possible, add the reason for the call, for example, Het gaat over het kerstdiner. Dank je wel. |
| Eric: That means “It’s about Christmas dinner. Thanks.” It’s a more formal, polite sentence, as it has the words... |
| Jacob: alsjeblieft. |
| Eric: “Please” and |
| Jacob: dank je wel |
| Eric: “thank you so much.” What about in very formal situations? |
| Jacob: In very formal situations, like business-related messages, you can say something like... Dag meneer Jones, ik wil graag snel met u over het contract spreken. |
| Eric: “Hello Mr. Jones, we need to speak about the contract urgently.” |
| Jacob: After you give the reason, you can add Kunt u mij alstublieft terugbellen? |
| Eric: “Could you please call me back?” This sentence sounds quite formal. |
| Jacob: Right. If you’re calling someone for an official purpose, this will be the phrase to use. Or another set of phrases can be used.. Excuses dat ik u stoor, maar zou u mij willen terugbellen? |
| Eric: “I apologize for disturbing you, but could you please call me back?” |
| Jacob: This is a very formal way to ask someone to call you back and you can use it in any situation. |
