| Paul: Ik verheug me echt op je verjaardag. Ik kan het niet geloven dat ik hier alweer een jaar ben. |
| Marleen: Weet je nog toen ik je voor het eerst ontmoette. Je was net begonnen met je nieuwe baan. |
| Paul: Ik houd van feestjes. Zullen we dit jaar onze verjaardag samen vieren? |
| Marleen: We hebben dezelfde vrienden. Wat zullen we gaan doen? |

| Judith: We can have a party here, then we can make a real Dutch evening out of it. I have a couple friends from America who would like that. |

| Judith: Then, for our Dutch friends, it will be a nostalgic evening. |

| Judith: We'll buy a big cake, and then we'll make poffertjes and bitterballen, and then we'll serve cheese cubes and little pieces of Unox smoked sausage. |

| Judith: You can do that, and then I'll make a couple of other bite-sized morsels and take care of the wine. |

| Judith: Okay, time talk about this “Unox”. “Unox” is a very famous brand name in the Netherlands. The company started in 1937 in Oss, a city in the south of the Netherlands. |
| Peter: Exactly, you are in the middle of the commercial now. A great time to recommend the smoked sausage “de rookworst”. This was produced by Unox and quickly became famous as de lekkerste worst van Nederland, |
| Judith: “the tastiest sausage in the Netherlands.” |
| Judith: Since then they have begun making many other products. One of the first products to be added was canned tomato soup. It was the first time something like that had been introduced to the Netherlands and people were a bit skeptical about it, but the soup proved to be just as good as homemade soup and needed only to be warmed up. |
| Peter: Yeah, I grew up on it - canned tomato soup. Also, this company organizes every year the Nieuwjaarsduik, |
| Judith: ”a New Year’s dip in the sea.” |
| Peter: They started in 1960 but by that time people were very skeptical or it was just very cold since only six people participated, but then came the marketing, the company gave out warm soup on that day ever since, and in 1998 around 10,000 people took part. All diving into the almost frozen water on the first of January - Happy New Year! |

| Vocabulary and Phrase Usage |
| Judith: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Peter: The first food we’ll look at is.... |
| 1. “Hapjes”, or “lekkere hapjes” (lit. tasty bites) as they are also called, are small bite-sized snacks that are served on birthdays , served at all kinds of parties. Small pieces of toast with spread, or of any kind of sausage, cheese, egg, or fish. Very very popular and tasteful. And these “hapjes” are also served when a few friends come over for a drink or sitting in a cafe. |
| 2. “Kaasblokjes” (cheese cubes) are the simplest of these “lekkere hapjes”. |
| Grammar Point |
| Judith: The grammar focus of this lesson is the use of prepositions with verbs. Some verbs require the use of a certain preposition. |
| Peter: That’s true. For example “wachten op” (wait for), “vragen om” (ask for/about), “denken aan” (think about/of), “kijken naar” (look at) and “houden van” (like). |
| Judith: Some verbs can be used with more than one preposition. For example, "beginnen" can be used with either "met" or "aan". Each preposition gives it a different meaning. |
| Peter: Here's a sentence with "beginnen met" -- Volgende week begin ik met een nieuwe baan, |
| Judith: “Next week I’ll start at a new job.” |
| Judith: And how about a sentence with "beginnen aan"? |
| Peter: Daar begin ik niet aan. |
| Judith: “I won’t have anything to do with that.” So it comes as an idiomatic meaning "beginnen aan", isn’t it? |
| Peter: Exactly. |
| Judith: "Geloven" (to believe) can be used with the prepositions "aan" or "in". |
| Peter: "geloven aan" was used with fairy tale figures. But it is something we rarely use anymore. "Geloven in" we use a lot and we use this for ideologies and people. Also, you'd say, Hij gelooft in God. |
| Judith: “He believes in God.” |
